Mequon- (nee Apel) Found peace on 16 January 2020 after a long battle with dementia at the age of 89. Loving mother of Karl Schmidt of Thiensville, Kurt (Laurel) Schmidt of Castaic, CA, and Karen (Andy) Kraus of Portland, OR, and proud Grandmother of Elizabeth, Rachel and Hannah Schmidt and Sister of Anita Beckendorf of Arlington, TX. Further survived by niece Marie Beckendorf of Arlington, TX, Cousin Doug (Carol) Zache of Minocqua, WI and other relatives and friends in WI and California.

Dorothy was employed as a bookkeeper at Northcott Neighborhood House for many years and as an office manager at Pastoral Counseling Service. She was a long term member of the Brown Deer and Mequon United Methodist Churches, Church Women United, and served on the Board of Northcott Neighborhood House, along with being Secretary/Treasurer of the Sunset Beach Condo Association in Lac du Flambeau, WI, where she owned a vacation property. A celebration of her life will be announced in the future or can be obtained through the funeral home website. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ozaukee Humane Society, Northcott Neighborhood House or the Alzheimer’s Research Association.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Christopher Budny for his many years of medical care of Dorothy, and to the nursing staff at Columbia-St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee and Nurse Colleen of Horizon’s Lawlis Family Hospice for the outstanding and compassionate care they provided in her final weeks.
