Obituary for Janis Irene Grootemaat (Travnicek)

Janis Irene Grootemaat

Known to all as “Nana.”

June 9th, 1938 to January 6, 2022.

She is survived by her three children, Vicky, Jacky, Lori (Rich); her three grandchildren, Danielle (Matt), Kyle (Liz), and Eric (Steph); her 5 great-grandchildren, Mikael, Krystina, Jacob, Katie Mae, and Arowyn; Her 3 Salukis, Diamond, Olivia, Kindle, and her Ridgeback, Wahoo. Further survived by extended family and friends.

As Nana took her last breath with us all by her side, I kept remembering her saying “I’m sorry.” We don’t know why she kept saying that. Sitting here writing this and thinking about it for some time. If you knew my mom she was sad to leave us behind but thrilled to be reunited with Papa, and the host of family, friends, and animals waiting to greet her, and most of all where she can breathe and walk without pain. Nana was a dedicated mother first and foremost. She treasured her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She embraced every moment with them. Her vivacious personality always made people around her feel happy and loved and knew she really cared. She made friends everywhere she went. She always knew how to brighten someone’s day. She treated everyone with kindness and respect. She truly loved her hobbies, she was an amazing seamstress and crafter. She bred, trained, and showed her dogs and took pride and excitement with what they all could do. She spoiled everyone and every animal.

I don’t have to tell anyone how much she loved Papa. When you saw the two of them together you just felt it.
We love you Nana and miss you.
