Obituary for Mary E. Hooton Fagan

Mary E. Hooton Fagan, 69, died peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2022, at Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee after a long battle with kidney disease. Mary (nee Hooton) was the loving wife of the late Dr. David J. Fagan and mother to Michael Fagan. She was born in Chicago, IL to the late James D. and Wilma B. (nee Manthey) Hooton.

Mary was a professional artist and creator of one-of-a-kind jewelry, enjoying all things artistic, colorful, and whimsical. Shy and unassuming, she had streaks of bravery that manifested when needed. Mary loved travel and clouds, red flowers, and animals (especially cats), all things Disney, and nature walks. She had a quiet sense of humor and a joyous laugh. Mary gave generously of her time and talents, always willing to help others. Her warm personality endeared her to patients as she worked faithfully alongside her husband in his medical practice for many years.

Beside her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her sister Barbara Kruzel, two brothers James Dale Hooton and Russell Hooton, and a niece Anna.

Survivors include one son, Michael; siblings-in-law Roberta “Midge”, Ann, Carol, and Richard; ten nieces and nephews plus numerous grand nieces and nephews. Mary especially enjoyed being an aunt and took a keen interest in their lives. When Mary made a friend, it was for life. She will be greatly missed by her close friend and champion, Kathy, as well as her group of jewelry making and metal smithing friends.

Private services will be held, with interment at Bethania Cemetery in Justice, IL, next to her soulmate and husband, Dave.

Those wishing to celebrate Mary’s life are encouraged to plant flowers, support the arts, or gather with friends. Memorial donations are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin or the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, where she, Dave, and Michael shared many happy times.
