Barbara Michaels

August 27, 1934 — August 7, 2021

Passed peacefully on August 7, 2021, age 86 years. She was the daughter of the late Edwin G. and the late Genevieve M. Michaels and sister of the late Gary E. Michaels. She is survived by sister-in-law Gail Michaels of Grafton, WI; nieces and nephews Michelle (Joseph) Deutsch of Mequon, WI, Susan (Mark) Peterson of Minneapolis, MN, Paul (Christine) Michaels of Belgium, WI, David (Victoria) Michaels of Port Washington, WI, and John (Krista) Michaels of Sheboygan, WI. Also surviving: Joshua, Sarah and Jacob Peterson; Jessica, Justin (Megan), Brett (Clare), Benjamin, Lindsey, Lillian, Elizabeth (Lucas Weeson), Olivia, David, Shannon, and Renee Michaels; Riley and Gavin Weeson; Ariana and Jayden Peterson; Nixon and Reese Michaels, and longtime special friend Robert M. Anservitz. Also survived by a host of family and other friends. Barbara graduated from Riverside High School, earned her undergraduate and graduate degree in education at UW-Milwaukee and her post-graduate degree from the University of Illinois (Urbana). She served her Fullbright Fellowship in Gateshead, England. She taught the primary grades for 40 years for the Fox Point-Bayside School District and was active in professional societies at the local, state and national levels, and participated in Pi Lambda Theta and Delta Kappa Gamma national honor societies. In her retirement, she was a volunteer for the Fox Point-Bayside School District, MPS, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Milwaukee Public Library (Bookseller), UW-Milwaukee Alumni Association, and the Center for Children's Literature at Carthage College. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the staff at St. John's on the Lake for their care and compassion during the final days of Barbara's life. Visitation will be Saturday, August 14, from 9-11 AM at Three Holy Women Parish-St. Hedwig Church, 1702 N. Humboldt Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM. The Reverend Allen J. Bratkowski, a family friend, will preside. Private burial at Rocky Run Cemetery in Poynette, WI. If desired, memorials in Barbara's name to the UWM Foundation, for the School of Education, 1440 E. North Ave., Milwaukee, 53202.
