George Newman was inducted in the Army Sept 17 1943, sent to Europe, returning to Milwaukee in October 1944 to wife Helene Hauger Newman and 4 month old son Bruce Gilbert Newman, born July 18, 1944. After returning home from the Army, George opened the Texaco service station in Brown Deer, where Bruce learned from his dad patience, mechanics, work ethics and how to "Newman-ize" a project!!!. Bruce excelled in athletics in little league, high school wrestling, track and field, but football was his game (as he said later "our team members played offense and defense"). Attending Northern Michigan University on scholarship, taking pre-med classes, he returned to Brown Deer to marry Kathy Brown, eternal love of his life since 7th grade, and graduating from Marquette Dental School in 1970. Bruce & Kathy opened their own dental office on Highway 100 & Bradley on the second floor before moving his practice to the RED OWL shopping center in the old Brown Deer Bank building on Bradley Road. In 2008 the new building was built to Bruces specs following his designs, (he also drew up the building plans for the "garage" up north on the lake.) Always the perfectionist to get details right, thinking in advance of needs and wants, his passion for architecture can be seen in many additions to house and home.
Kathy and Bruce made lifelong friends, including high school chums, working on the Class of '63 school reunions, employees, college roommates and any one they met. Bruce went to Guatemala for 10 years, sponsored by the Rotary Club, to donate time in rural communities for dental procedures. Kelly went on three of these trips into learn first hand the dedication her dad had to helping the less fortunate.
As a dad, Bruce worked with Kelly & her friends to form a team for the girls' soft ball league, sponsoring their team as "Newman Dental" and supporting the fields and new wood signs. Bruce was the best softball and pitching coach ever! He taught Kelly everything she knew, becoming a high school varsity and all state first base player. Kelly attributes her knowledge in dental hygiene school, and as the head of her graduating class, due to dads' teaching and patience…. after all he did practice dentistry for over 50 years!!!
Every one knew they could call on Bruce & Kathy to help when needed, but also to enjoy the fun & laughter at home and "up north" in Minong at the cabin. Water skiing, sail boarding, boating, (even with the dogs and cats on board!), cutting trees and bonfires, horseshoes, was what summer meant to the family & friends. With TRIVIA always on his mind, Bruce could give tidbits of "knowledge" or jokes.
Although he raised his daughter to know all of the things a son should know, carpentry, landscaping, raising dogs & cats, basics of cars, how to put a dock in the water up north, Bruce thought of Andrew, Luke, Mike and Paul as his second sons.
Left behind with fond memories are daughter Kelly & grandson Warren, and sister Noreen (Carey) Washington of Las Vegas. Joining back with the rest of immediate family of dad George, mom Helene and younger brother Greg.
Lifelong friends who are like family, Tim, Sharon, Mike & MaryAnn Scherrer & son, Mike & Mary Brown and family, Rob & Diane Lund & daughters, Barb Rupnow, we will all remember Bruces love of family, friends and animals.
