After a difficult and courageous battle with cancer David ended his earthly journey on Sunday, November 2, 2025. After High School Dave attended MATC and studied photography and journalism. He followed that with over 20 years in a successful career in retail, managing multiple photo and communication stores throughout the Milwaukee area. Through this work he met many wonderful people who became lifetime friends. David's lifelong passion was photography; beginning in the 70's with a darkroom he built in the basement of his parents' home. Dave always described himself as a photo journalist. He never took a picture; he told a story.
David's second love was downtown Milwaukee. As a proud resident of downtown for decades he staunchly defended and supported the businesses and people who lived in and visited Milwaukee. Dave was a wealth of knowledge on Wisconsin and Milwaukee culture, history, entertainment, and sports. He had a unique way of learning what was important to those he met and he always enjoyed a good time.
While living downtown he bartended at the Swingin' Door. This was a perfect match; he could promote the city with facts and hospitality while pursuing photo journalism. The result was coworkers and patrons who became a second family and amazing photographs of the Brewers, Bucks, Packers, Marquette, Summerfest and all things Milwaukee, with some weddings thrown into the mix. Eight years ago, Dave began doing freelance work for the Catholic Hearld which he thoroughly loved.
At first glance much of Dave's art captures an event. A second look gives you a glimpse into the human spirit. This was Dave's true gift and will be his legacy.
David was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Donald and Joyce Bernacchi. He is survived by his loving sisters, Donna (Rob) Lawien and Diane (Randy) Kunstmann. David was the proud Uncle of Joel (Denise) Lawien, Toni (John) Genske and Tyler (Karen) Kunstmann and an even prouder Great Uncle to Sean, Jack, Molly and Maya.
David's family would like to recognize the countless friends who shared good times, laughter and supported and loved Dave like family throughout his life.
We would also like to thank Dr. Alqwasmi and the staff at the Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital Cancer Care Center for their commitment and the care they provided to Dave and the team at Horizon Lawlis Family Hospice for the gentle care they provided in his last days.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society-Fight Colon Cancer or to the family for disbursement to downtown Milwaukee charities.
Visitation for David will be Friday, November 21st, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Old St. Mary Catholic Church, 844 N. Broadway, Milwaukee, WI, followed by a Funeral Mass at 3:00 PM. Private interment St. Peter's New Cemetery in Slinger, WI.
