David Hertzberg

April 30, 1948 — April 14, 2021

David Hertzberg, 72 of Germantown, WI, died of Covid-19 complications on Wednesday, April 14th, 2021 at Aurora Medical Center Grafton. David was born April 30th, 1948 in Sheboygan, WI and attended John Marshall High School in Milwaukee. He served overseas in the United States Army during the Vietnam War in computers and logistics. Upon his return, he took advantage of his GI Bill and attended The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. There, he met his future wife (and by his own account, his much better half) Mary Kastenholz. They were married on Memorial Day, 1971 and would have been celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Dave began a small clothing store in Milwaukee, The Clothing Loft, in 1986. He employed roughly 15 people over the course of a decade. His passions were golfing, fantasy football, the stock market, and old movies. A self-proclaimed dog whisperer, his unconditional love for his four-legged friends was well known. He enjoyed a good conversation, especially debates on current events. He could be incredibly stubborn, but his fierce loyalty and crazy sense of humor were also personality trademarks. David was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease and eventually was put on at-home dialysis, which lasted almost 3 years. He received a kidney transplant in July of 2019. He was incredibly grateful for this gift and would want to encourage everyone to become an organ donor. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary; son Bret Hertzberg and daughter-in-law Cheryl; daughter Jessie Erickson and son-in-law Jake, grandchildren Julian and Molly; brother Michael and his wife Ann Marie. He leaves behind his spoiled dog and grand-dog, Roxie and Tiki. He is also survived by his much-loved brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and cherished friends. He is preceded in death by his brother Daniel. David will be missed by his sweatpants and crocs. A very big thank you to the nursing staff who cared so well for him in his last days at the Aurora Medical Center Grafton, his Davita at-home dialysis trainers, UW kidney transplant team, as well as an army of nurses, doctors, and healthcare specialists. Per David's wishes, a private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
