Francis Scheffer was born February 9, 1928 in Humbird, Wisconsin, the youngest son of the late Frank and Clara (Fassbender) Scheffer. He died on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022 pi at the age of 94. He received his Bachelor of Science from Eau Claire State Teachers in 1949 and his Master's Degree in History from the University of Wisconsin in 1955.
Francis taught history in Wisconsin schools for 38 years, with the last 28 years of his career teaching at Homestead High School in Mequon. He married Doris Kier of Eau Claire in 1952. Together, they had four children, Donna (Tim) Platner of De Pere, Mark Scheffer (Barbara Miller) of Middleton, Charles (Jane) Scheffer of Colgate, and Debra (Mike) Rizzo of Brighton, Michigan. Francis also leaves behind many who love him, including grandchildren, Megan (Lee) Borchardt, Katie (Francisco) Cerda, Erin Platner, Kelly Platner, Andrew (Megan) Scheffer, Lucas Scheffer, Brianna Scheffer, Piper (Mike) Arp, and Blaire Bancroft. Great grandchildren include Francine and Gabriel Cerda, Oliver Scheffer, and Luna Arp. The Harden family also holds a special place in Francis' heart. He is preceded in death by his wife Doris in 1990 and six of his seven siblings.
During the Korean Conflict and again at the time of the Cold War Crisis in 1961-62, Francis served his country in the U.S. Army. He attained the rank of Captain.
While living in Sun Lakes, Arizona, Francis married June O'Leary in 1992, who preceded him in death in 2009. Later, upon moving back to Eau Claire from Arizona in 2010, Francis married Ruth Harden a dear Humbird High School friend. Ruth preceded Francis in death in 2017.
Services will be held at Lumen Christi Parish, 2750 W Mequon Road, Mequon, WI 53092 on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m and interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Milwaukee. Visitation will take place at the church from 12:00 p.m. until the time of Mass. A light meal will be served for friends and family after the Mass.
