He was born March 10, 1922 in Summerville, SC, the only child of Hampton and Antoinette (Rogge) Waring. He graduated from Summerville High School at age 16, and from Clemson University at age 20 in 1942, with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then entered the Army Signal Corps and served three years in the Pacific, in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines, heading up a unit that set up communications near the front lines. When the war ended, his unit was sent to Kyoto, Japan, where they again set up a communications post. It was at the Officers' Club in Kyoto that Capt. After being discharged from the Army, they married in his home town of Summerville, SC on January 10, 1947. They lived in Charleston for a year while he worked for the electric company; then he accepted a position with the Wisconsin Telephone Co., where he worked for the next 35 years, including a two-year assignment at AT&T in New York City. They built a house in Hales Corners, WI in 1956 and lived there until January 2015, when they moved to Waterford Senior Living in Waterford, WI. Hampton enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward to playing golf whenever possible and loved fishing, especially at their cottage on Lake Independence near Big Bay, MI. He also took several fishing trips to Canada with friends. In later years, he was an avid reader and enjoyed following golf on television.
