Helen Mcelroy

August 16, 1928 — September 29, 2018

Helen Elizabeth McElroy, née Elena Sissea, died peacefully September 29, 2018 at Three Pillars Masonic Home in Dousman, WI. Born August 16, 1928 in Newark, OH to Marie (Samoila) and George Sissea of Romania (where the family lived for two years in the 1930s), Helen graduated from Newark High School, and was married to Wally McElroy from 1947 until his death in 2010. Always ready to host friends and family, Helen loved cooking and playing cards or other games of skill. She was a talented artist and singer, avid reader, and tireless volunteer for her children's schools, Trinity Episcopal Church, and various political and charitable organizations. Helen's secretarial career began as a legal stenographer while she was a senior in high school and ended with her retirement as secretary to the postmaster at the Newark Post Office. She was an active member of the Newark Business and Professional Women's Association. After their retirement in 1979, Wally and Helen lived for 30 years in Englewood, FL where Helen joined and was for several terms president of the Chi Nu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. For ease in their senior years, and to be closer to their son and his family, Wally and Helen moved to Three Pillars in 2008. They thoroughly enjoyed their extended "vacation," new friends, and caring staff. Preceded in death by Wally, her parents, sister Marie, and brother George; Helen is survived by two children: Lin (Paul Hess) and Dan (Jill), three granddaughters: Xan (Chris Sprouse), Molly (Dan Kroemer), and Kelly (Peter Fleming), as well as four great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Respecting wishes for private services, Helen will be inurned with Wally at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers/donations, please enjoy a great meal in Helen's memory.
