Jacqueline A. Slater passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at the age of 87. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John W. Slater.
Born to parents John and Augusta Murray in Kenora, Ontario, on August 28th, 1934, the family moved to Illinois when she was 16. There, she completed a degree in English at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Jacqueline, or "Babe" to her parents and husband, delighted all who knew her with her sense of humor and zest for life. She loved to garden, birdwatch, read, and gather her family around the dining room table for meals and games. That same table was also used for her many sewing and quilting projects.
Jacquie created special quilts for each of her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. She would make these quilts from scraps of clothes and fabric from throughout their lives, turning them into true works of art. She was an avid reader; one of her favorite books was David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens. Her love of genealogy led her and others on fact-finding trips to Scotland, Canada, and other sites closer to home. She had great fun playing volleyball, golf, and bowling with her team every Thursday. She was young at heart and also waterskied with her children. She would let go of the tow rope as she headed back to shore, and her arm would float upward in a graceful salutation.
Retirement brought new adventures as she and Johnny explored the country in their truck and trailer, and spent summers at her beloved Camp War Eagle in Ontario. The camp, on War Eagle Lake, was Jacquie's special place. She introduced her husband, children, and grandchildren to the joys of life at camp. She especially enjoyed evenings on the lake fishing for bass.
Jacquie is survived by her three children: Jeff Slater, Anne Slater, and Erin Maris, and their spouses Kari Slater, Stuart Stebbings, and Nick Maris. She will be missed by her treasured grandchildren and great-grandchildren, excellent neighbors, nephews and nieces, in-laws and friends.
Family and friends whose lives were touched by Jacquie are invited to share in a visitation at Schramka Funeral Home, 423 N. Main St. in Thiensville, WI on August 19, from 5:00 to 7:00. We will also have a Celebration of Life at the house on September 3 from 2:00-5:00.
