Jeanette "Jan" Counsell
August 25, 1944 — February 8, 2024
Jeanette Clara (Rau) Counsell peacefully entered in to eternal life on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Jan was born August 25, 1944 in Sheboygan Falls, WI to Wallace and Ethel (Rausch) Rau and to a childhood on a thriving dairy farm. She attended grade school in a one room school house that set her on a path to
college at UW-Whitewater and a teaching degree. She met her husband John while teaching at Oconomowoc HS. Jan supported John on his baseball journey and they began a long, happy, married life of 56 years. She was extremely proud of her career as a teacher, working at several high schools before landing a position imparting business skills on hundreds of girls at St. Joan Antida High School. She helped many of them begin successful careers all over Milwaukee. Her second professional act was in hospitality and led her to Florida and an office with a view of beautiful Fort Myers Beach. She managed Cane Palm Condominiums on the Gulf of Mexico with the passion and energy of a teenager and worked tirelessly to make every guest and families stay memorable. Project Jan, as she has been nicknamed, was a get things done type, before one project or job was finished, another was started. She was a brilliant seamstress who outfitted many brides. The house was beautiful and the dinner table always plentiful due to her wonderful gardening and cooking skills. She was a natural at golf. She could fix anything. And she loved hosting guests in her home. Sometimes John wished she would just sit down for a minute. She was a kind, strong, capable, loving and creative soul who led a genuinely full life.
She is survived by her husband John, as well as her children, Jennifer (Michael) Hughes and Craig (Michelle). Her six grandchildren, Brady, Jack, Finley, Hayden, Rowan and Devyn were the light of her life and were her students in her post teaching life. They are forever grateful for the life lessons and time Gramma spent with them. She will join siblings Leroy and Delores, along with her parents in God's kingdom. She is survived by loved nephews and cousins.
Join us in the celebration of Jeanette's life on Saturday, February 24 at 10:00 am for visitation with a service to follow at Noon at the Schramka Funeral Home, 13220 W. Capitol Dr, Brookfield, WI 53005.
