Jerome Laganowski

September 19, 1924 — March 23, 2018

Jerome Laganowski, age 93, passed away peacefully on March 23. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the youngest of 13 children, Jerry was known for his outgoing personality and wonderful sense of humor. A veteran of World War II, serving from 1943-1946, Jerry fought in the Battle of the Bulge as well as in the Pacific Theater as part of the Philippine Liberation. After the war, he met Dorothy Opalewski, his love of nearly 67 years. They married in 1951, made their home in Milwaukee, had three children; Mark (Jill), Linda (John), and the late Paul (the late Lori), as well as 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. Jerry is further survived by many other wonderful nieces and nephews. But at age 93, Jerry outlived his many close friends; a fact he reflected upon very often in his later years. We still laugh about his tales of characters with names like Skorky Dulka, Yenke Schneider, and Skippy Jinda. During his working life, Jerry was a longtime union printing pressman; first at Wisconsin Cuneo Press, and later at Burton and Mayer. In the 1960s and 70's, as a part time bartender for one the neighborhood establishments, Jerry entertained friends and customers alike, complete with the occasional light-up bow tie, goofy hat, and never-ending raucous jokes! For over 50 years, Jerry and Dottie lived in their cozy home on the Northwest side. During those years, they entertained frequently, sang amazing harmonies loudly along with anyone who would join in, and created many wild and delightful memories. These folks loved to party! In later years, in order to be closer to the kids, Jerry and Dottie moved first to Ixonia, in Jefferson County, then finally to Hartland. Always together and watching out for one another, that's how they remained until Jerry's dimming memory began to make life a bit challenging. In fact, a eulogy for Jerry certainly cannot be complete without his lifelong "chief cook and bottle washer" Dottie. ( A term of endearment that he often used to describe her.) Jerry is an example of a life well-lived. He grew up in a big family, proudly served his country, practiced his faith, worked at a fulfilling job, laughed and cried, and to the best of his ability, had 93 long and healthy years made rich by his precious family and friends. Visitation at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Oconomowoc on Thursday, April 5 from 10 am until the time of the service at 11 am.
