John Matyas

John was born to eternal life March 19, 2021. He was 94. John once hit a triple at Borchert Field. In life, he hit a grand slam. Preceded in death by his wife Mary (nee Binzak), his parents John and Regina, and siblings Dorothy Binder, Patsy Lutz and Harvey Matyas. Loving father of David (Susie) Matyas, Susan (Greg) Black, Paul (Maureen), Thomas (Jane) and Jeffrey (Linda) Matyas. Dear grandfather of Molly, Elizabeth, Mark, Ellen, Ryan, Aaron, Eric, Teresa, Jenna, Alyssa, Kyle and Mitchell. Loving great grandfather of Elijah, Isaac, Sam, Ethan, Eloise, Jude, Ophelia, Charlotte and Brooks. There was always a sincere sparkle in John's eyes when near family offspring no matter the generation each child represented. This truth was particularly evident every Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. He will also be missed by cherished friend Joanne Paszek. Also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Besides his love of family, love of country was central to John. At 18, he joined the United States Navy and served on a ship in the Pacific Ocean as a Morse Code light and flag signal communications specialist. Military experience culminated in his patriotic and emotional Honor Flight to Washington D.C. on Sept. 15, 2012. Following World War II the Chicago Cubs signed him to play baseball in the Minors in Kentucky. His name is listed in the 1945 World Series Program as a member of the Cubs organization. He joked that the Cubs never did release him. His professional career path turned shortly thereafter to supporting his family by beginning a 43-year stint at Square D Company in Milwaukee. He was lucky in love when he married Mary Binzak in 1950. The fortunate couple was blessed with great friends dramatized by F.L.O.P. (Fun Loving Old People) outings and vacations. Their marriage thrived for just under 50 years when Mary passed too soon in 2000. John coached his children in a variety of sports over the years. His passions also included singing with the Meno-Harmony Barbershop Chorus, participating in the Old Time Ballplayers Assn. and volunteering at Community Memorial Hospital for many years. He resided in the home built in 1958 for all but his last year. He was happiest whenever family or friends visited or called. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony Catholic Church, N74 W13604 Appleton Ave., Menomonee Falls, 53051, Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. Visitation is at the church just prior from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Burial will follow mass at the St. Anthony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Anthony Parish or to the veterans group of your choice would be appreciated.
