Karen L. Downing

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Karen Downing of Janesville.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Karen graduated from Taft High School. She adopted Wisconsin as her home in the late 1960s. Karen devoted many years to life as a mother and homemaker. Her work life included years at American Family Insurance, and she later retired from VNE Stainless Corporation.

Karen is survived by the love of her life, the center of her world, her devoted husband of 34 years Charles (Charlie) Downing, and her loving sons: Tom Gage (Kitty) of Kansas City, MO, Chris Gage, Kevin Downing (Ashlie), and Bill Downing (Jody), all of Janesville. She was blessed with and adored 7 grandchildren: Brock, Ellsie, Jackson, Easton and Amaya of Janesville, as well as Claire and Claudia who are proudly serving in our Armed Forces. She also leaves behind a stepson, John Kousch and his family, plus dear friends and extended family. She was predeceased by her parents, Chris & Louise Lauritsen, as well as son Dan Downing.

Karen had a ready smile, and was a beautiful light. She enjoyed the simple things in life, including cats, bird watching, especially hummingbirds, movies and music, including the sounds from Tom & Chris’s rock band years ago. As a child she enjoyed fishing with her father and later fishing and outdoor experiences with her husband. Karen was a great cook, and liked trying new recipes focusing on healthy eating. Karen possessed a generous spirit and a willingness to help wherever she could.

A Celebration of Karen’s Life is scheduled for noon on Sunday, October 25, at Sidelines Pub & Grill, 731 S. Wuthering Hills Dr., Janesville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Madison. Cremation arrangements have been made through Schramka Funeral Home in Brookfield.
