Michael Bondar

April 1, 1951 — September 30, 2025

The Wolski's family shares bittersweet news: oldest brother, longtime bartender, caretaker, and storyteller of the tavern, Mike Bondar, has passed away peacefully, in the arms of his  companion and wife of 43 years Joann  . Also Survived by siblings Bernard, Susan, Dennis, Jackie and Jill. Mike succumbed to Lewy Body Dementia after a 6 year struggle. Mike – In his private life, Michael had great appreciation  for simple pleasures and the beauty of the world around him, he was an avid reader, chess player , Rugby enthusiast, and art collector. Michael always looked for the best in people and was kind and generous. When his father passed Michael gave up an art scholarship to help his mother keep the family together.  Soon after Mike and his brother took over Wolski's.  A great-grandson of the original founders – Mike was a fixture behind the bar for decades. Known for his wit, warmth, and the way he could remember your order before you even sat down, Mike will always be remembered as part of the Wolski's tradition. The world-famous "I Closed Wolski's" stickers. Whimsical and heartfelt, and from Mike's creative brain, the ubiquitous sticker became part of the Milwaukee fabric   You can scarcely walk down a street without seeing the sticker on a car bumper. People had to ask what it was about, and it was an inside joke that became known internationally: Spotted internationally in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. To name a few. Wolski's Tavern will be hosting a celebration of the life of Michael Bondar on Sunday October 26th from noon to 3pm. Friends and family are encouraged to join together, enjoy refreshments, and share memories of Michael. In case you're uncertain, if you've closed Wolski's you're a friend.  If you've done a shot of Stoli-O with Michael you're family. We look forward to reconnecting and fondly remembering Michael. Wolski's Tavern, 1836 N Pulaski Street Milwaukee, WI 53202 Should you like to honor Mike further, a memorial fund for Lewy Body Dementia in Mike's name will be on site for anyone who wishes to contribute.
