He held a number of jobs until he took a position with the Milwaukee Post Office, working at the downtown facility for 20 years. He decided on a career change when he was in his 50's and went into mortuary science, graduating from MATC and chosen by his classmates to deliver their commencement address. He found his calling there, teaching embalming at MATC and working as a funeral director for Borgwardt Funeral Home until his retirement.
