He earned a degree in Business Administration from Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri, in 1957, where he proudly served as president of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Following college, Rich proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1958–1959.
After his military service, Rich began his career in sales in the Chicagoland area. In 1964, he joined Joseph T. Ryerson and Son, Inc., where he enjoyed a successful career in sales and sales management spanning more than 35 years.
Rich married Caroline Alger in 1964, and together they raised three sons. He was involved in Brookfield Parks and Recreation sports, where he coached many baseball and basketball teams and enjoyed great success.
Upon retirement, Rich and his wife enjoyed traveling the world together, visiting more than 60 countries. They also spent their winters enjoying the sunshine in Longboat Key and Marco Island, Florida.
Rich was an avid sports fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, and Wisconsin Badgers. He loved attending sporting events, going out for lunch, and, most of all, spending time with family and friends.
