Richard Scamfer

August 14, 1931 — April 16, 2016

Richard "Dick" Scamfer, 84, Mequon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16th, 2016 in Mequon, Wisconsin. Richard was born on August 14th, 1931 in the town of Washburn, Wisconsin. He graduated from Washburn High School in 1949. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Northland College in 1953;and his M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 1961. After college, Richard enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany where he served his country as a water supply specialist from 1953-1955. After his tour in the Army, Dick accepted a teaching job in Iron River, Wisconsin teaching high school science in 1956. After several years in Iron River, he had the opportunity to teach at Grandville High School in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The new school became Brown Deer High school where he taught federal and state government and history for over 30 years. He was chairman of the social studies department and served as athletic director for 12 years. In his early years teaching in Brown Deer he also met his future wife, Dolores (Hawkins) Scamfer while chaperoning a field trip together. They married in 1961 and spent 51 years of marriage together raising their family in Mequon, Wisconsin and spending their summers in Iron River, Wisconsin at their cabin that Dick built as a young man. Richard was also a businessman from 1963-1970. He owned and operated Pinecrest Lodge located in Iron River, Wisconsin. He spent those years teaching during the school year and running the resort with his wife and co-owners in the summers. Dick was devoted husband to Dorie and father to his two children Eric and Katie. Throughout his life, Dick was an avid sports fan. In his early years he played baseball, basketball and football for Washburn. He also competed in boxing events as a youth. He played semi-pro baseball for Dupont while teaching in Iron River. After playing sports, Dick transitioned to coaching sports in both Iron River and Brown Deer and serving as athletic director. In his later years of teaching he coached golf. Golf was Dick's passion for his entire adult life up until the last few years that he could no longer play. He found ways to play year round with golf outings in the summers in Wisconsin and winters in Destin, Florida. His love of sports was also as a spectator for just about every sport with some of his favorites being the Badgers, Golf,as a season ticket holder for the Packers and his children and grandchildrens sports in later years. Dick was an active member of the Mequon/Thiensville Lions club, ran for State Assembly, sat on numerous boards and committees for political and civic groups and supported numerous charities. Most notably, Dick always put his family first with his love and devotion to his wife and children. Richard is survived by his children, Eric (Isabella) Scamfer, and Katie Laude, Beaver Dam; his grandchildren, Alex, Daniel, Timothy, Samuel and Jack. His brother, Robert (Kathy) Scamfer, Nekoosa, Wisconsin; and further survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends. Richard was preceded in death by his father, Engval "pinky" Scamfer, his mother, Caroline(Strom) Scamfer, and his beloved wife Dolores (Hawkins) Scamfer; and other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be Wednesday, April 20 at 12 PM at the funeral home. Visitation from 10 AM until time of service. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
