Obituary for Winfield James Scott

Winfield James (Jim) Scott

Jim entered God’s nearer presence on November 28, 2018 at age 85.

He was the loving husband of Betty Joan (nee Price) for 61 years. Their marriage was blessed with daughters Mary Jo (Steven) Neuenfeldt and Susan Elizabeth (Donald) Caveney. Further blessed with, and survived by, four grandchildren, other relatives and countless friends.

A graduate of New York Military Academy, then Norwich University, Northfield, VT., Jim was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Armored Division. Promoted to Captain, he later served in the Army Reserves until retiring in 1961. He received his post grad diploma from Marquette University in 1962.

Following a sales career with Norton Abrasives, Jim founded an industrial tool company, The Abrasive Group, Inc. in 1970. He remained CEO and President for the next 48 years, until the ravages of esophageal cancer made it impossible for him to continue in that capacity.

Jim was an ad hoc professor at Marquette University, Milwaukee, and authored articles for Modern Machine Shop magazine. He enjoyed memberships in The Abrasive Engineering Society (Co-Chairman International Conference), National Small Business Association, Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce. He also enjoyed his membership with the Western Racquet Club, Elm Grove, WI.

Spending summers on Cape Cod while growing up, Jim loved sailing. After moving to the Midwest, he could still enjoy sailing off the shores of Door County, WI. There were many memorable excursions with good friends (one time, somehow surviving a devastating storm). Other times just he and Betty enjoyed being far out on the waters of Green Bay.

Over the last 11 years, Jim’s unique crosses ministry (inspired by a ‘special message’ he received when near death in 2007) has given encouragement and blessing to approximately 12,000 souls throughout the United States and across the world. The special message crosses have been shared with those in local coffee shops as well as others living in remote corners of the world. One week before he died Jim ordered 500 more, encouraging his fellow ‘Christian soldiers’ to keep up the good work.

During Jim’s terrible struggle with cancer, he never once complained. It was a mark of how he lived his life. Although he loved joking with others, he never spoke an unkind word to, or about, another.

His final wish was for everyone to ‘love one another’.

On his final day on earth Jim’s dearest loved ones -Betty, Susan, Don, grandson Scott & granddaughter Sarah (with special friend, Devin) surrounded him with their love.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm, December 8, 2018 at Holy Apostles Anglican Church, 142 Lake St., Pewaukee, WI 53072. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials given in Jim’s name to Holy Apostles Anglican Church where he was a faithful member, or to a charity of your choice.

“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His faithful servants.” Psalm 116:15
