Maybe it was over twenty years ago, I recognized Tom moving on from one church to the next, a kind of symbolism for hope. He appeared to be at peace with himself and I struggled to see why he liked these "other" churches that I would find myself rarely attending. Let Tom go there.
You see after many years I had adjusted to St. Benedict the Moor Parish, 9th and State Street. After Tom's passing, I began to feel a kind of miraculous pull to more downtown east locations. Old St. Mary's for one, and oddly enough, St. John the Evangelist. I like going there on Saturday evenings. These are two of the oldest Catholic Churches in the city of Milwaukee. They remain cleverly spaced apart.
Tom was always deep in the Spirit and he laughed in ways of truth and not because of anxieties. He knew better, it seemed to me. With these older church dwellings, today they now seem brand new. In the downtown area, many churches remain. For many years I remained aloof to the churches I now frequent. But not so for Tom D. Not so for him because he remained aware of his faith among the various churches. One that grows with eternity and love. Tom will not be absent from my heart.
