Coffee, Conversation, and Connection: Schramka Funeral Home's Monthly Gathering Continues to Grow
Grief can often feel isolating, especially after the support of family and friends begins to fade. Recognizing the need for ongoing connection, Schramka Funeral Home created Coffee and Conversation, a monthly gathering designed to bring people together in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Held in May at Schramka Funeral Home in Brookfield, the latest Coffee and Conversation gathering welcomed community members who have experienced loss and are seeking companionship, conversation, and connection. Unlike traditional grief support groups, the program is not focused on therapy or structured discussions about grief. Instead, it provides an opportunity for attendees to gather, share stories, and enjoy meaningful social interaction with others who understand the journey of loss.
“Our goal was never to create another grief support group,” explained Shramka Funeral Director Amanda King. “We wanted to create a welcoming space where people could come as they are, enjoy a cup of coffee, and connect with others who understand loss. Some days we talk about loved ones we've lost, and other days we talk about gardening, movies, or life in general. Those conversations and connections are what make this group so special."
The idea for the group emerged after Schramka's 2024 Holiday Remembrance Service, where several attendees expressed a desire for more opportunities to gather throughout the year. Those conversations inspired the funeral home's Valentine's Widow's Brunch, which further highlighted the importance of creating spaces where people could simply spend time together. From those early requests, Coffee and Conversation was born.
Since its inception, the group has developed a loyal following. Two attendees have participated in nearly every gathering, finding comfort in the meetings' casual nature.
“What I appreciate most about Coffee and Conversation is that it isn't just about grief,” shared one regular attendee. “I've attended other support groups that felt very structured or focused on specific emotions, but this feels different. Some days we talk about loss, and other days we talk about everyday life. It's comforting to have a place where I can simply show up, talk about what's on my mind, and connect with people who understand.”
For Schramka staff, the most meaningful moments are often the simplest ones. Conversations naturally evolve from catching up on the past month to sharing stories, laughter, and everyday experiences. In those moments, the focus shifts from loss to life, creating an atmosphere where healing happens through connection and community.
The success of the program has led to its expansion beyond Brookfield. Today, Schramka Funeral Home also hosts monthly Coffee and Conversation gatherings at the Arboretum in Menomonee Falls and Teal Shores in Mequon, providing even more opportunities for individuals to build friendships and find support.
Coffee and Conversation continues to meet monthly, offering a reminder that while grief may be part of a person's story, it does not have to define every conversation. Sometimes, healing begins with a cup of coffee, a shared laugh, and the simple comfort of being together.
