Preserving Memories: Why Sharing Your Story Matters
From photo albums to recorded stories, discover simple ways to preserve family history and pass cherished memories to future generations.
At Schramka Funeral Home, we often hear families say, “I wish I had asked more questions,” or “I wish I knew more about their life before I was born.”
Those sentiments are among the reasons we were honored to present Preserving Memories: How to Share Your Legacy at LindenGrove in New Berlin. Hosted by our Community Outreach Coordinator, Amanda King, the presentation encouraged attendees to think about the stories, lessons, traditions, and experiences they want to pass on to future generations.
Funeral service is rooted in storytelling. Every service we help create is built around the memories, values, and moments that made someone’s life unique. Yet many of those stories can be lost if they are never shared.
During the presentation, attendees explored practical ways to preserve their legacy, including creating photo albums, sharing family recipes, recording personal stories, and utilizing modern tools that combine photographs and memories into keepsake books for loved ones. More importantly, the discussion focused on starting conversations now, while there is still time to tell the stories only you can tell.
One of the most meaningful moments of the afternoon came near the end of the presentation. A resident shared that she had grown up in an orphanage and felt she didn’t have the same family memories or traditions that many others talked about. As the conversation continued, however, it became clear that her life story was every bit as valuable. She had raised children, overcome challenges, and created experiences and lessons that only she could share.
It was a powerful reminder that legacy is not reserved for those with family heirlooms, extensive photo collections, or generations of stories passed down through the years. Legacy is the impact we have on others. It is the lessons we teach, the love we share, the obstacles we overcome, and the lives we touch.
Many attendees shared that they had already begun preserving photographs and family stories, while others left inspired with new ideas for documenting memories and passing them along to children and grandchildren. The response reinforced something we see every day in funeral service: people want to be remembered, and families treasure the stories that help keep loved ones close.
At Schramka Funeral Home, we believe every person has a story worth preserving. Whether through photographs, written memories, recorded conversations, recipes, or family traditions, sharing those stories today can become one of the greatest gifts you leave behind tomorrow.
We look forward to continuing these conversations throughout our community and helping families discover meaningful ways to preserve their legacies for generations to come.
